Why is Coexistence Living Important?

We, the humans, are the most intelligent species on this planet. As we are advancing every day, we have forgotten that we are not the only ones on this planet. The Earth is home to many other species.

Imagine that you are peacefully resting in your home and suddenly a group of animals come and disrupt your home. How would you feel? We are somewhere doing the same thing to other species every day.

In the crowded world, humans and other species are constantly competing for space and resources. Coexistence has become the need of the hour because, without it, the future seems quite disrupted. Coexistence in simple language means living and existing peacefully at the same time and same place. Let’s take an example of a family. A family consists of many members. They are of different ages and have different likes and dislikes. But a family finds a way to address everyone and live peacefully together.

Our ancestors lived in coexistence with animals, the planet and nature for millions of years. That’s why species have survived to date but it feels that we have recently forgotten the concept of coexistence. You must be thinking about-why coexistence is important? A simple answer to that is- that we won’t exist.

Let us understand with an example how coexistence is important. We all know about honey bees. But can you imagine that if they become extinct in the future we might have to struggle for basic food?! Yes, you read that right. Scientists call the honey bee a “keystone species”. Without them, our ecosystem and the food chain would suffer drastic changes. Honey bees pollinate many foods that we consume on a daily basis. Hence, finding a way and living in harmony with species is very crucial.

We might not realize but our big to small actions are harming the lives of other species. We all know that humans are the prime contributors to pollution and global warming. The negative effects of climate are increasingly significant. Polar bears, who are the largest bears in the world, are evolved to live near sea ice and are dependent on it for hunting, travelling and other aspects of life. For thousands of years, indigenious people of Arctic and Polar bears lived in coexistence. But now with the warming of the Arctic and loss of critical habits, it is forcing the Polar bears to come close to people and in turn, disrupting their and our coexistence.

Flora is dependent on fauna and vice-versa. If we ignore and choose to continue harming the ecosystem, we will have to face adverse effects which have already started showing. There will be more rise in temperature, food scarcity, less oxygen and the list goes on. Everything that is on the planet has a significant role to play. We need to respect it and value it for our well-being.

As Sir David Attenborough said, “We need to learn how to work with nature rather than against it.” Otherwise, the impact of our consumption and advancement is soon going to impact us.

With changes in our personal lives, we can bring a change. Respecting the plants and animals around us can be the first small step. If you wish to bring a change and are looking for a bespoke eco-luxurious life where you and nature can coexist, we have something for you!
